I was working from home in my garden office listening to BBC Radio Surrey when I heard the words “Eurovision Song Contest”. Panic set in as I scanned the room for the TV control to change the channel, but then the song played starting with birdsong and a cock a doodle doo.
Someone lost a shoe
I'm still in last night's make up
I'm waking up like, "What's this new tattoo?
Room is spinning, ears are ringing
Clutch my pearls like
‘What the hell just happened?’ sang Remember Monday, a British country pop girl group, representing the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 this May in Switzerland.
The chorus of this catchy pop song happened and I stopped working to listen. Then started working again with a smile. For the first time in years I loved the UK song for this geopolitical battle masquerading as an international song competition for Europe. There is an innocence to the song about three women waking up after a wild night out that gets wilder as each person recites their version of what happened the night before.
What the hell just happened?
No clue, but I liked it
After the song finished I looked at the video on YouTube. It is relatable, nostalgic, with no elves, wizards or ancient folk tales invading our minds. Like a softer version of Frankee’s - F U Right Back, you sing along to it and imagine being at the party in this mansion.
(Freedom) I wanna shave my head, oh
(Freedom) I'll paint the whole town red, oh
(Freedom) I wanna kiss a stranger
The song may only ever exist as a Eurovision entry, which would be a shame as it could be the song for a feature film vehicle for an up-and-coming actress who has 24 hours to save the day while nursing a brutal hangover and helping friends with issues.
The Remember Monday members Lauren Byrne, Holly-Anne Hull, and Charlotte Steele came across well on the radio. As I grew up in Surrey I wish them all the best in flying the flag for the United Kingdom.
I went up on the roof (hey), jumped into the pool (hey)
You should do it too, too, too, too (oh, you should do it too)
Oh, I know that I'm a wreck (hey), what did you expect?
You can blame my ex
What the hell just happened?
No clue, but I liked it
I have a place in my heart for Eurovision as it helps me remember sitting in the lounge watching it with my parents each year and our family holidays to Spanish hotels where the entertainment staff would put on evening shows to entertain the tourists. Happy memories and recognition of the professionalism of hotel staff.
