Pitch Meeting Review

Pitch Meeting is a comedic look at big budget cinema to make fun of the illogical storytelling to get bums on seats and make money for sequels. It is a spoof of the filmmaking process with a Producer Guy and Screenwriter Guy intentionally making fun of the script, characters and storyline. The comedic criticism is well intentioned and designed for YouTube attention spans.
This trailer tagline sums it up perfectly: “Making fun of movies that you watch instead of seeing the actual movie”. Some of their episodes have featured films such as the Avengers, the Star Wars film series, and Love Actually and Daniel Craig Bond films.
It makes you laugh at the suspension of disbelief for the sake of entertainment. Not only are you laughing at the film but at yourself and how you never noticed this when watching it. Like when characters fall in love after two days and when they break the rules of science and when one person with no combat training can defy the odds by killing 10 highly trained soldiers.
How I found Pitch Meeting
I was scrolling through YouTube looking for entertainment and I came across the comedic wonder which is Pitch Meeting. I was drawn in to the fun dialogue between Producer Guy and Screenwriter Guy. This is shown by their use of fun catchphrases such as: “Actually it’s super easy, barely an inconvenience”, to excuse the lack of jeopardy in action scenes or to state how easy it is for main characters to complete their objective and when Screenwriter Guy says “because” to deflect questions about the logic from Producer Guy. You laugh along when you realise how formulaic the films are to turn entertainment into commercial products, but we learn that there is no perfect formula when it comes to creating successful films.
Pitch Meeting Highlights
Some of my favourite moments are:
1 Love Actually I laugh at this because it breaks down all the absurd male fantasies of the film and how it is mostly powerful men wanting to sleep with their employees. It also pokes fun at what would happen if Mark knocked on Julia’s door and her husband Peter answered the door instead of her and when you are busy laughing, you learn that she was only 17 when she starred in this film and I wonder how many British men travelled to Wisconsin in order to get laid and failed.
2- The Dark Knight Rises I find this funny because Batman is barely featured in this and we mostly get just Bruce Wayne limping around. Despite breaking his back and having no knee cartilage, he dons the suit again after doing push ups in prison. Another funny part is when Bane travels with Wayne to India to tell him how he will torture his soul when instead of wasting 30 hours of travel time, he could have just sent a video. The funniest part was when Gotham sent all their police officers, around 60,000, into the sewers to find Bane. Bane than explodes some bombs and the 60,000 police officers are trapped in the sewer. For some reason, they did not try to escape through the manholes and 6 months later, they escape from the sewers, clean shaven and with no signs of malnourishment. The police, armed with batons and one pistol, charge at Bane’s troops who are armed with automatic weapons. Somehow the police do not die in the first 10 seconds.
3- Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory - I find this funny because Charlie’s four grandparents are stuck in one bed all together and have not moved for 20 years and survive on cabbage soup. After Charlie finds the golden ticket and decides to bring Grandpa Joe. Grandpa Joe is so happy that after 20 years, he gets out of bed and starts dancing around the room, he could have done this earlier and gotten a job in order to help the hardworking mother and his impoverished family. The joke is that Grandpa Joe is the secret villain of the film.
Conclusion
Pitch Meeting has 1.4 million subscribers on YouTube and the first ever Pitch Meeting was the Justice League Pitch Meeting which was released 8 years ago and has a total of 3 million views. There are multiple videos with over a million views which is a testimony to its success.
Even though streaming has made it easier not to go to the cinema and Pitch Meeting makes fun of big budget movies, it would not exist without those big studio films it makes fun of.
You can enjoy the franchise films and pitch meetings all from the comfort of your living room. It helps you realise that show business is a business like any other industry.
